Realien GmbH is a family-owned company founded in 1997 and headquartered in Neckartailfingen near Stuttgart. In addition to the construction of clean rooms and mobile clean room cabins, the company specialises in the creation of customised process environments.
Realien often works with technical false ceilings, which are generally tightly designed and intended to make maximum use of the available space. Environments like these make it difficult to plan quickly and cost-effectively, because even state-of-the-art tools such as 3D laser scanners are hard to use in these spaces. Up-to-date plans are rarely available, so on-site planning is often the only option.
This is precisely the type of environment where our software demonstrates its full potential, in conjunction with an AR headset. The wearer can respond agilely to their surroundings, perceive reality around them, and take every aspect of the environment into consideration in their planning. On site, the planner and customer can see whether the plan will work or if there will be collisions. PipeplannAR can also be used to create an assembly manual in order to turn the planned pipe system into a reality.
We came across the application at the JACOB Group’s booth at Powtech 2022 and have been in contact with the company ever since. Up to that point, I had only seen these types of AR headsets used in gaming, and it was exciting to be able to use the technology to create value in my career, as well. The functionality was still rudimentary at the time, but the potential was already obvious.
The PipeplannAR team joined us at the construction site, and we worked on the technical-level planning together. There were a few teething problems during the first test, of course, but the concept and the principle were sound. In that sense, the field test provided us with valuable information for the pipe run required.
We are currently running endurance tests on a headset, so as soon as a suitable project comes along, we will use PipeplannAR to plan it on site. In this way, we not only have the benefits of the app; we can also show our customers that we are the sort of partner who uses state-of-the-art technology. I have to add that at its current stage of development, planning pipelines with the app is really fun.

You need a Microsoft HoloLens or a comparable mixed-reality headset. We would be happy to provide you with one for testing purposes. Internet access is not required.
The app is intuitive, so you can learn to use it quickly and easily, even without prior AR experience.
Currently, we are still in the testing phase, so we are looking for pilot customers; these customers will not incur any costs. We only ask for feedback and the chance to engage in mutually beneficial and inspiring dialogue.
There is a plug-in for this purpose; however, it is currently only available to inventor. We would be happy to provide it to you. Other CAD systems are not supported at the moment, but if you send us your export, we would be glad to digitise it for you.
Yes, the headset can also be used with glasses.
You may experience some slight nausea while using the mixed-reality headset. However, it should not be as intense as the discomfort often caused by VR headsets.
Yes, it is safe. The ‘screen’ of the HoloLens is a see-through display that allows you to see and hear your surroundings at all times. No additional controllers are required, so both hands remain free. If the screen bothers you, you can easily flip it up to remove it from your field of vision.
